Bowen Island,
British Columbia

Immersed in unfeigned nature, a striking structure designed by SMSTUDIO, was created to house a young family who longed for a drastic shift in lifestyle—relocating from Vancouver to Bowen Island. Anchored by trailing, sizable rocks—albeit, beautiful within themselves—the house feels as if it is both floating, as well as firmly set on solid ground.

Specifically situated for western sun, the family’s experience of both the interior and exterior was thoroughly taken into mind. Outside, boldness is eveident in the choice of an ashen black and simplistic lines, forgoing embellishment and clutter. Inside, there is an interplay of simplicity, vastness and charm. details such as handmade woven lampshades (by Twenty One Tonnes) that instantly create a visual layer of softness, depth and character. Concrete floors chosen throughout create a cool, almost in-nature feeling, within the spaces.

The feeling is open, calm, and a balance of natural warmth (particularly in the use of Douglas Fir plywood and Western Red Cedar) and coolness is achieved in what feels like an effortless flow. Spaces allow for quiet, lingering gazes outside windows alongside more lively conversation over a colorful breakfast—and nothing feels, or seems, too pretentious or precious. Instead, life and living is welcomed.
