As the new year begins, with soft snowfall and snowy surround, a tour of Arthur Erickson’s Perry Estate came about.

Originally designed back in 1963 to be an artists’ retreat, this estate has been unaltered and well-concealed for over six decades. Its current owner is a modernist home collector from California, but now, it is for sale, awaiting its next owner, and hopefully, an individual to carry on its story.

In this home, the modern tendency to hurry and seek superficial distraction falls to the wayside. Perhaps the reasoning is because of the sanctuary-like, Japanese-inspired outlook or the fact that outdoor and indoor spaces converse so naturally—as is often a telltale sign of Erickson’s vision. It is no surprise that the Perry Estate has hosted some of the most intriguing creatives hailing from the west coast, including Bill Reid and Frank Perry.

There is a strong, repeated use of wood throughout—be it the hallway walls or beams above—offering a sense of encapsulating warmth. The look and feel is an authentic, organic rhythm. Spaces open up in intriguing manners, sometimes to reveal transitions to additional living areas… and while others have been built with intentional closures or coziness in mind—like kitchen nooks and lounging areas.
